Thompson Lantern
18th
to early 19th century
A
popular design due to
its simple
beauty and
many practical
uses. It was
almost
square in shape
{front
to back, sidewise}
with
large windows. This
style
once functioned
variously
as a pedestal
lantern
or a portable
lighting
device with feet
so
it could be hung on the
wall
or set down. The
double-roofed
chimney was a efficient ventilator, keeping
drafts
and wind from extinguishing the candle. Today this
remains
a classic early lantern design for many of the same
reasons
and is a worthy choice for practically any home or
building
in the 18th or early 19th century style.
