Boylston
Match Safe
Circa
1830 - 1850
An
accessory made popular with the
invention of
friction matches about
1830.
This style is shown hand
painted on a
aged tin surface.
Match
safes were
hung on the wall to hold
the
supply of matches
for fireplaces,
candles and
oil lamps. The slanted
holder
tray is both pleasing to the eye
as
well as practical. With no corners
except
the bottom seam,
it is easy to
grasp
and retrieve
the contents within.
Our
safe is available in the original
and the larger
size for longer candles,
matches,
letters, keys or small objects.

Dummerston
Whale Oil Lamp
Circa
1800 - 1825
This
painted, sheet metal “hand lamp”
with
its removable conical shade
{originally for
ease of lighting the wick or refilling
a font} is
designed
to reflect the light and heat
the font by
spreading
radiant
heat from the flame. This charming
but practical
lamp,
now
electrified,
has many uses in today's
home as
did in homes
and offices of the early 19th century.
