Boylston Match Safe
Circa 1830 - 1850

An accessory made popular with the invention of friction matches about 1830. This style is shown hand
painted on a aged tin surface. Matchsafes were hung on the wall to hold the supply of matches for fireplaces, candles and oil lamps. The slanted holder tray is both pleasing to the eye as well as practical. With no corners
except the bottom seam, it is easy to

grasp and retrieve the contents within.
Our safe is available in the original
and the larger size for longer candles,
matches, letters, keys or small objects.
