Measuring the distance between lamp posts

August 22nd, 2008 by admin

Outdoor lanterns and lamp posts along a winding driveway driveway (by barnhouselighting)

The unique nature of your home will determine the distance between your wooden posts. There is no rule for distance, but generally 100′ to 125′ is the recommended interval between lanterns on a long driveway. When the pathway is winding and heavily wooded, adjust the spacing in a way that pleases your eye and illuminates your entranceway.

From colonial reproduction to rustic, a range of styles are available for outdoor post lanterns. Consequently the lighting comes in a range of sizes. Choosing the size of the lantern should depend on how the lantern will be seen. Will the lantern be up-close illuminating a pathway beside the house? Or will it be viewed in the distance accenting a long scenic driveway, serving as a welcoming beacon for all guests coming to your home? Generally a post lantern will appear half its actual size when viewed 50 feet away. Take distance into consideration when choosing your post lantern.

Timber framed or log homes are often decorated in the rustic style, and now this distinctively American design is growing in popularity. Many homes include sophisticated natural motifs. Lighting is a key factor in any interior home design, so it is a perfect opportunity to incorporate the rustic look. Pick lights that are earthy with natural themes. Many of today’s fixtures have design patterns from nature such as pine cones, deer, moose, and bear. Whether you are recreating the American Craftsman look or simply bringing a bit of nature into your contemporary home, the rustic style is a unique way to design your living space.
