Whether
primitive or sophisticated, early sconces are difficult to date.
The variety of forms seems inexhaustible, and they owe as much to the imagination
of their makers as
to the general
fashion of the times. The floral design of the
six unusual pewter sconces
in
the ballroom of Barnard Hall (circa 1795) is executed
in repouse. The flowers on these adaptations are done in applied
relief for a more dramatic effect.
